Second practice

Last night was the second practice of the season. I thought it went well.

We started out with a one on one drill and then moved into a 3 on 2 drill that I think we will use in practice quite often.

We put in our new play tall, using just one post player and five guard. We also put in big boy.

On defense, we talked about our 2-3 zone and about 1-3-1 and how that will help stop the high post play.

Then we scrimmaged for the last few minutes and showed a lot of aggressive play.

First practice and schedule

The first practice went well. We got to know each other and the three new players to the team. We will be a taller group this year so I will have to develop an offense around that.

Our first game is scheduled for Sunday Jan. 11 at 4 p.m. on Mickle Court 1.

Our second game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. on Mickle Court 1.

We find out the rest of our schedule after Tuesday, Jan. 20th.

Parents win!

It was a battle but the Parents game out on top in a scrimmage against the Sharks 30-10 at Beattie gym on Wednesday night. The boys did a great job rebounding though against the taller team.

The season concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Mickle. We will get together after the game at Westfield's Food Court to celebrate another great Sharks season!

Game 7 vs. Laser

With just six guys, the Sharks played a competitive game against the Lasers, losing 23-13. One player for the Lasers scored 20 of their 23 points.

Bret led the Sharks with six points and 10 rebounds, nearly a double-double. Joey added 4 and Nate had 3. Joey grabbed seven rebounds.

Wednesday night will be a fun night so be sure to make it to practice.

The final game of the season is next week at 1 p.m. We will party at the Westfield Mall Food Court afterwards and hand out awards!

The Sharks battled hard again before falling to the Spurs 18-10 at Goodrich gym, Court 2. The Sharks cut the lead to four in the fourth quarter but couldn't get the baskets to fall. Joey led the team with four points, Brendan, Jake and Nate each added a basket.

The Sharks were outrebounded by the Spurs 30-27. JT led the team with eight rebounds. Way to go JT. Nate grabbed four.

Game 3 vs. Longhorns

In the first game of divisional matchups, the Sharks faced a tough test against a very tall team in the Longhborns. They rose to the challenge though after taking some early tough blows but lost 32-19.

Brennan led the team with 12 points, including two three-pointers. Brendan added 3 while Grant and Joey each had two. Joey took home the Shark prize for the week as he led the team with eight rebounds. Good job.

JT and Nate missed the game. We are looking forward to practice on Wednesday.

I was so proud of the boys today! They fought so hard and played very aggressive against a very aggressive team.

Game 2

With a more aggressive attitude, better rebounding and shots that were falling the Sharks rolled to a 24-2 win over the Hornets on Sunday afternoon.

Joey led the team with six points while Brendan, Grant, Nate, and Brennan all had four points and Bret added two.

Rebounding was stressed prior to the game and a new idea was handed out after the game. If the Sharks out-rebound their opponent each week, the players get to decide something that the coaches have to do. Bret and I determined it before the game and decided that Coach Nunez and I would have to run at the end of practice instead of them.

The other part was the individual rebounding leader for the Sharks is given a miniature shark and it is awarded to the player after the game. This week Brennan won the award, leading the team with six rebounds. Each week the Shark needs to be returned to practice so it can be rewarded. You can put your initials or your name on the Shark to show that you earned it though.

We will find out on Tuesday when our next game will be and I will share that with the team at practice on Wednesday night.

Go Sharks.

Game 1 of 2008

The Sharks played their first game of the season against the Jayhawks at Mickle on Sunday. The Sharks fell 26-5. Nate led the team with 3 points on three throws while Brendan added a basket.

I was very happy with the way the team played. They hustled to every loose ball and kept playing hard even when the shots weren't falling.

We got off a ton of shots, good shots, and they will fall in the future. It was funny when we were shooting at halftime and seeing all of their shots going in. They can do it. They just have to believe in themselves because I believe in them.

We will work on shooting this week in practice. Work on our zone defense some more and on our fundamentals.

Go Sharks!

Schedule and team rundown

OK. So we know the first two games and then we get a new schedule.

We open on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. on Mickle court 2 against the Jayhawks.
Then on Jan. 13 we play at 2 p.m. on Mickle 2 against the Hornets.

As for the team coming back, it includes:

Bret -- The son of the coach has made some great strides. I think the Husker basketball camp had something to do with that. Beating Maric for some dunks can do that for your confidence.

Brennan -- This is his first year of playing basketball and the first with the Sharks. This boy has some game and the opposition better look out.

Sam -- The guy's game is really coming together. He worked hard over the off-season and his shot is looking great for the big boy play.

Grant -- Another new addition to the team. Grant will give the Sharks some physical presence as he isn't afraid to mix it up. His dad is a teacher so I'm sure he is a good learner.

Nate -- We are looking forward to have Nate back again. He always give the Sharks a spark with his quickness.

Jake -- Talk about a physical presence. This boy can set the picks with the best of them and his shot is getting better with every practice.

Joey -- The Sharks dead eye shooter. This boy can flatout shoot it. We will be sure to run some special plays for this future Husker!

Brendan -- If you are looking for the future steals leader in the NBA you need to look here. He's got the quickness of a cat and also the vision.

Skyler -- We are so happy to have Skyler back this year. He keeps the team centered with his calm attitude and his sneaky quick shot.

JT -- This boy is the rebounding king. He's never seen a loose ball that he didn't think he could get to and grab and take for a basket.
