Doubleheader day games 4 and 5

It was a tough day of the ball not going through the hoops for the Sharks in pair of losses.

They lost the opener to the Swish on Southeast Court 4 30-5. Brendan had three and Jack had 2.

Then they traveled over to Southeast Court 3 and lost to the Fairbury Hoops (who finished 8-4 in the league last year) 44-9. Brendan and Nate each had four while Jack had 1.

The Sharks are off again until Jan. 10.

We will have our normal night of practice on Monday nights at 7 p.m. at Pound.

We have also added a second night at 9 p.m. on Friday night at Pound on the new court. It will give us a chance to shoot out and play some pickup games but it's not mandatory to be there.

Game 3 vs. Wizards

What a great team effort in the game Sunday vs. the Wizards. The Sharks came out on the short end 23-19 but it was a battle until the end.

Each of the players is learning their role on the team and what they can do to make the Sharks successful. That includes playing hard, rebounding and then scoring.

Bret led the Sharks with nine points. Nate added 6 while Austin and Brendan each had 2.

Next week we have two games so we will have to get a good amount of rest.

Great job Sharks. I'm so proud of you as a team!

Game 2

The Sharks fell in game two of the season 35-9 to the Titans at Southwest Court 5.

The Sharks couldn't get into their offense and faced their first full-court press of the season.

They need to continue working on boxing out when rebounding and also playing as a team.

Austin led the Sharks with four, Brendan added three and Nate had 2.

Cornhusker State Games -- Day 2

We returned to play the Nebraska All-Stars in the championship format at 11 a.m. this morning. We switched to a 1-2-2 defense it and slowed them down a bit and made them work a little harder than yesterday. We just couldn't get anything to fall, which of course, frustrated us. We lost 49-2.

Joey had the only basket.
Grant led the team with four rebounds.

Then the final game. Oh my!
We played the Monarchs. The team that we played in the first game of the tournament. Of course when they showed up they had many new players that didn't play the first time. They didn't write any names down on their sheet, just numbers, so there was no way to check names or ages on their roster. Then each team is to provide a person for the score table and they didn't do it so Lori pointed it out to an official. The reason for having it is two fold. So the person keeps the score right and the foul right for the teams. Well the official just said oh well and made another person from our team help. It's listed as an automatic FORFEIT on the sheet but the official wouldn't do anything about it. Then the game started and it was very physical with the new fresh players that had about our six that had already played four games in two days. They actually had one player that just showed up for the game today. I can't believe that someone would pay $32 to play one game but to each his own (I'm sure that isn't what really happened). anyway there were about six minutes left in the half when our point guard, Nate, went down with a shoulder injury leaving us with five players. Then we battled to halftime even though Austin took a hard shot. As we started the second half, Austin's hand wasn't getting any better so he had to stop leaving us with just four players so WE had to FORFEIT. I hated to do it but it was our only option and the officials acted surprised.

Joey, Jack and Bret each had a basket in the final game. Bret led the team with four rebounds.

Then we got into kind of a brew-ha-ha after the game when we pointed out the many rules that they had broken in the tournament and CSG officials did nothing out. It was a sad way for it to all end. I had truly hoped for a better experience.

I appreciate all of the hard playing that all of the boys did. Nate, Bret, Austin, Jack, Grant and Joey should be proud of themselves and I appreciate the parents' support as well.

Go Sharks!

Cornhusker State Games -- Day 1

It was the first day of the Cornhusker State Games and I guess you could call it a learning experience. Even though it is the kind that most of us don't like.

The first game was supposed to start at 9 a.m. and the rules say GAME TIME IS FORFEIT TIME. And yes it says it in CAPS. Well all of our team was there by 8:45 and ready to go at 9. The problem is the other team wasn't. So we waited and waited and waited. Of course the officials don't know the rules so I had to share it with them. The other coaches didn't seem in any kind of a hurry whatsoever. I think they only had four players and they were trying to hid it. Anyway, the official made us decide if we were going to take the forfeit win or play the game. I wanted to play a pickup game and get the forfeit but they said they wouldn't do that. So I approached the team and asked and then said, we came here to play, right? So we played. We played decent but lost 30-11

Bret led the team with nine points and Joey had the other two.
Austin led the team with eight rebounds.

Then we came back against the Nebraska All-Stars. They appeared to be a group of players from some YMCA league. They were a good group and played the game right. Ran their offense through at the end when they had a big lead and we lost 49-6.

Joey led the team with four points while Bret had the other two.
Jack led the team with two rebounds.

Then we came back later on in the day and played Norfolk. They were a very cocky bunch and even when they were up probably 50-8 or something like that their big guys decided to try and shoot three pointers. They continued to fast break some and try to steal the ball in the backcourt and the coach didn't really back them off. Oh well to each his own. We lost 71-14. I was just glad that the Nebraska All-Stars beat them earlier in the day.

Austin led the team with six points. Nate added four, Joey and Jack each had two.
Austin led the team with five rebounds.

We return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. against I'm guessing the Nebraska All-Stars in the championship format and then should have a shot at the first team again.

The Sharks lost their final game of the season 19-11 to Malcolm but Coach Reetz was very proud of them because they reached his set goals for the final game and their good shots just wouldn't fall.

Grant got his first basket of the season which was very important. They played man to man defense for the first time for an extended amount of time and they did a very good job with it.

The Sharks finished the season with a 2-6 record but also improved throughout.

Game 5 -- Sharks vs. Magic

After jumping out to an early lead and playing a great first quarter, the Sharks held on for a 23-21 victory over the Magic in basketball action Sunday night at Mickle.

The Sharks played like a team for most of the first half and really took control of the game. But the Magic didn't stop coming and hit some shots toward the end of the game to cut it to two. But the Sharks came away with their first win of the season.

Austin led the Sharks with seven points, including a three-point shot at the buzzer to end a quarter. Jack added six, Bret and Jake each had four while Joey had two.

Bret again took home the Shark for the third time as he grabbed 10 rebounds. Austin grabbed five while Joey and Jake each had four.

Game 4 -- Sharks vs. Bearcats

The Sharks got off to their best start of the season but couldn't withstand a run by the Bearcats in an 18-8 loss Sunday at Mickle Court 2.

The Sharks were playing with confidence in the early part of the game but just when their shots stopped falling the Bearcats heated up making four shots in a row at one point.

Game 3 -- Sharks vs. Blazers

The Sharks played a strong second half but came up on the short end 20-11 to the Blazers Sunday afternoon at Mickle.

The Blazers raced to a commanding 16-2 halftime lead after making their first four shots of the game. But the Sharks came back after halftime and played with more passion and won the second half 9-4.

Jack led the Sharks with four points, while Joey added a three-pointer, and Bret and Austin each had two points.

Austin came away with the Shark this week! Austin grabbed six big rebounds to lead the team. Grant added five while Nate had four. Every Shark had at least one rebound and for that they should be proud! The Shark goes to the player that has the most rebounds in the game. There is a photo with Bret and the Shark from the first week. Just a reminder to bring the Shark back either to practice or the day of the game.

2009 -- Game 1

The season got off to a quick start at Mickle on Sunday afternoon when the Sharks traveled to play the Fire and came out on the short end 24-7.

The Sharks had to deal with a big guy inside for the Fire and he was tough to deal with. But the Sharks showed a lot of hustle and desire throughout the game.

Nate, Jack, and Brendan all scored two points while Austin added a point.

The Sharks return to action next Sunday again at 3 p.m. (note time change) at Mickle.

The '09 Sharks Rosters

Well after tonight's practice we are heading into our first game. So here is a quick roundup of the talent:

Jack -- Jack is a newcomer to the team. I see him as a strong ballhandler and scorer and is a great addition.

Grant -- Grant is back for his second season with the Sharks. I've noticed that he has really become a part of the team is an much more comfortable.

Austin -- Austin is a newcomer to the team as well and previously played with Jack. I believe he is the tallest player on the team and will be quite a force inside.

Nate -- Nate is back for I believe his fifth season with the Sharks. He provides a lot of quickness outfront and is a great defender.

Jake -- Jake is tough to handle downlow. I think his hands have gotten much better and he has worked hard to become an even better player.

Joey -- Joey is playing his fourth season and we are thrilled to have him as he's a great all-around player.

Brendan -- Brendan just moved closer to us on the block and it's great to have him on the team as well. He is great with his outside shot.

Harlan -- Harlan is new to the team and will provide height inside as well. He is very athletic and is coming along quite nicely.

Bret -- The son of the coach grew a few more inches this season but will move outside more. He's been working hard on his outside shot and is a strong rebounder.

Be sure to come to the game at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Mickle Court No. 1. We will be the team in the white.
